The beautiful stained glass windows at Presbyterian
Church of the Roses bring light and color into the sanctuary. As the sun
moves on it's course during worship the light coming through the bright
windows illumines with different hues first one face , then another in the
congregation.
Dean Hooper, the artist who designed the windows, has
depicted the history of our faith using Christian symbols. First at the
upper left is the Star of David, showing our roots in Israel. Next the
Scroll above indicates the words of the ancient prophets. Below the scroll
is the Star of Bethlehem to represent the birth of Jesus. The Wheat and
Grapes and the Chalice remind us of Christ's self giving love, remembered in
Holy Communion. The Celtic Cross is a universal symbol for Christians of
Christ's sacrificial death and his resurrection to everlasting life. The
Dove representing the Holy Spirit shows the power of the Spirit radiating
forth upon the people. Below it is the ancient Christian symbol of a fish,
used by early Christians to identify one another. The last symbol in the
upper part of the windows is the Bible. It's pages seem alive, indicating
the life changing power in the Word.
The lower half of the windows depict plants that also
tie with our sacred heritage. First on the left is the Burning Bush in which
Moses heard the voice of God. Next are the Palms that welcomed Jesus as he
entered Jerusalem. Lilies we associate with Easter and the Resurrection. The
thistle represents the Scottish roots of the Presbyterian Church. You have
already surmised that the wealth of Roses at the far right are for Church of
the Roses! May we bloom brightly in the SON light and as the beautiful
windows cast a glow on each face here may we sense in those rays a blessing
and a call to serve.
