"I'd rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than live in the tents of the wicked.: (Psalm 84:10)
The work of the sexton is always satisfying, because the results are so visible, so meaningful, so appreciated.
Ministry Description: There are three objectives:
1.
Clean the building - one small portion at a time
2.
Provide for the needs of group meetings and activities - make coffee, set up furniture and audio/video aids, and put things away afterwards
3.
Contribute to the security of staff and volunteers working in the office
A full sexton shift is four hours. There are morning shifts from 8:00 a.m. until noon and afternoon shifts from noon until 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Many sextons serve the same shift each week -e.g. Every Tuesday morning or every Thursday afternoon, etc. Alternatively, one could take the second and fourth Wednesday afternoons of each month; or two persons could share a shift, each taking two hours. Backup volunteers fill in when those having regular shifts are away or are, for any reason, unable to be present at their scheduled times.
Church of the Roses is famous throughout the presbytery for its volunteer ministry, which saves the church budget more than $65,000 each year. Equally important is the sense of camaraderie and the joy of service experienced by each volunteer.
It is not necessary to make a long-term commitment in order to start serving the church in this way. Candidates may speak to any of our current volunteers, or come to our meetings at 9:00 a.m. on the first Tuesday of each month in the Adult Education Room.
